Palestra [em inglês] THE AGENCIES METHOD FOR MODELING COALITIONS AND COOPERATION IN GAMES, do Prof. Dr. John Nash (Princeton University), Prêmio Nobel de Economia em 1994.O Equilíbrio de Nash, conceito que revolucionou a teoria econômica e rendeu a seu criador, John Nash, o prêmio Nobel de Economia em 1994, completa 60 anos. A Bayesian Approach to Zero-Modified Poisson Model for the Prediction of Match Outcomes: An Application to the 2012-2013 La Liga Season

In any sports competition, strong interest is devoted to the knowledge on the team that will be champion. The result of a match, the chance of a team being either qualified for a specific tournament, or relegated, the best attack and defense are also subjects of interest. This paper presents a Bayesian methodology for modeling the number of goals scored by a team based on Zero-Modified Poisson distribution. Inference procedures and computational simulation studies are also discussed. The proposed methodology was applied to the 2012-13 La Liga and the results were compared with those of Poisson model through the De Finetti measure and percentage of correct predictions.

COLÓQUIO - IFUSP: Spins in Semiconductor Nanostructures

In the last decade there has been a strong interest to utilize the spin instead of the charge of carriers in semiconductor devices. Manipulation of the spin allows for faster device operation at a lower energy consumption and offers great opportunities for quantum computing and quantum communication. In this field of semiconductor spintronics there is special interest to control and manipulate the spin of both electrons and holes in zero-dimensional nanostruc-tures. In this presentation I will discuss results, which have recently been obtained at the Eindhoven University of Technology and at the University of Sao Paulo, on analyzing and understanding spins in semiconductor nanostructures. I will present optical spectroscopy performed on large ensembles of nanostruc-tures and on individual nanostructures. The experimental results and theoretical modeling show options on how to modify the g-factor and manipulate the spin of confined carriers. The author has more than 25 years of experience with research on III-V semiconductor nanostructures. He is an internationally leading expert on the application of scanning probe and optical techniques to the study of nanostructures and impurities in semiconductors. His work is presently focused on the spintronic, electronic and optical properties of individual self-assembled nanostructures and single impurities in a semiconductor. For more information on the research group please visit http://www.phys.tue.nl/psn/. The speaker is available for discussions in the period from March 9 (Monday) till March 21 (Friday). Colóquio MAP 01/11/2013 - Qualitative Aspects of the Differential Equations of Principal Curvature Lines on Hypersurfaces of Euclidean 4-space and their Partially Umbilic Singularities

After a discussion of some historical landmarks for the study of the differential equations as in the title, going back to Euler, Monge and Darboux, for the case of surfaces in Euclidean 3-space, the results of Gutierrez and Sotomayor (1982-3) on surfaces with Structurally Stable. Configurations of principal curvature lines and umbilic singularities and their Bifurcations will be reviewed and briefly compared with Peixoto’s Theorem (1962) for Structurally Stable Differential Equations (Vector Fields) and their Bifurcations (Sotomayor, 1974) on compact surfaces. An extension of the results for surfaces to hypersurfaces in Euclidean 4-space will be presented in the form of an improved version of the Genericity Theorem (of Kupka – Smale type) due to R. Garcia (1992). New elements of this improvement include the stratified structure of the partially umbilic singularities and the analysis of the heteroclinic partially umbilic connections and attached separatrix surfaces. Open problems and, old and present day, situations where the analysis of Principal Structures, as those in the lecture, for modeling and applications will be mentioned. The mathematical ingredients of this lecture can be regarded as belonging to the elusive boundary between Geometry, Analysis and Dynamical Systems. Work in collaboration with R. Garcia (UFG) and D. Lopes (UFS).

Lifetime model for multivariate survival data with a surviving fraction

In this paper we propose a new lifetime model for multivariate survival data with a surviving fraction. We develop this model assuming that there are m types of unobservable competing risks, where each risk is related to a time of the occurrence of an event of interest. We explore the use of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to develop a Bayesian analysis for the proposed model. We also perform a simulation study in order to analyze the frequentist coverage probabilities of credible interval derived from posteriors. Our modeling is illustrated through a real data set.

M02 - An Overview on Biodiversity Data Quality

Experts who are working with the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and the Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG) will discuss the latest on the development of a common conceptual foundation for biodiversity data quality (DQ). Practical aspects, including the identification of DQ requirements for species distribution modeling and for agrobiodiversity, and the development of a catalog of DQ tools and services will also be discussed. It is an excellent opportunity for researchers and students those involved with biodiversity data to learn about the latest findings of the group and to get involved.
