Gender research” in archaeology has been a vigorously growing field since the early 1990s, but despite its roots in a set of recognizably feminist critiques of disciplinary androcentrism and sexism, many of its practitioners explicitly deny that they are engaged in feminist scholarship or influenced by feminist politics. In taking up neglected questions about women and gender their motivation is to create new understandings of the cultural past that are more empirically robust, explanatorily incisive, and practically useful as a consequence of being gender-inclusive.
